Setting Up Your First Game
Game setup is straightforward:
-
Place seven cards face-down from your deck into your Life Area - these are your life points
-
Put your Leader card face-up in the Leader Area
-
Draw five cards for your starting hand (you can mulligan once if unhappy with your draw)
-
Set your 50-card main deck and 10 DON!! cards in separate piles
Each player needs their own complete deck plus ten DON!! cards. Once everything is set up, the first player begins their turn.
How Each Turn Works
Every turn in the One Piece card game follows six phases in order:
1. Refresh Phase
Reset all rested (sideways) cards back to active (upright) position. Any DON!! cards attached to your cards return to your DON!! pile.
2. Draw Phase
Draw one card from your deck. (The first player skips this on their very first turn.)
3. DON!! Phase
This is where the One Piece TCG gets unique. DON!! cards are added to a resource pool where they can later be spent to play or activate different cards. During this phase, you add DON!! cards from your DON!! deck to your cost area face-up and rested:
-
First player turn 1: Add 1 DON!! card
-
All other turns: Add 2 DON!! cards
These cards can then be used in the main phase to play cards, activate card abilities, or add stats to already played character cards.
4. Main Phase
This is where the action happens. You can:
-
Play Character cards by paying their DON!! cost
-
Play Event cards for immediate effects before discarding them
-
Play Stage cards for ongoing benefits
-
Use card abilities
When you play a card (Character, Event, or Stage), pay its cost by returning that many DON!! cards from your cost area to your DON!! deck.
5. Attack Phase
Attack with your active characters and Leader:
-
Characters can attack on the turn after they are played unless they have the Rush keyword
-
Additionally no player can attack during the first turn of the game
-
You may attack with your Leader and any Characters in your character area that are eligible
-
When attacking, choose to target either the opponent's Leader or one of their characters
6. End Phase
Resolve any end-of-turn effects and pass the turn to your opponent.

Combat Made Simple
How Attacking Works
Combat follows a clear sequence:
-
Declare Attacker: Rest (turn sideways) your attacking character or Leader
-
Choose Target: Select either the opponent's Leader or one of their characters
-
Declare DON!! Boost: Attach face-up DON!! cards to boost your attacker's power (if not already done)
-
Defender Responds: The defending player can:
-
Play counter cards from their hand to boost defense
-
Activate Blocker effects (some characters can redirect attacks to themselves)
-
Compare Power Totals: Add up base power + DON!! boosts + counter effects
-
Apply Damage or KO Result:
-
Higher power wins - defending character gets KO'd (knocked out)
-
If attacking Leader directly, defender takes Life damage (reveals cards from Life Area)
Power and Damage
-
If your attacker has higher or equal power compared to the defender, the defending character is knocked out
-
When attacking a Leader directly, the defending player takes damage by revealing cards from their Life Area
-
If a player runs out of Life cards, they lose the game
Using Counter Cards
Counter cards are your defensive tools. You can play them from your hand during combat to:
-
Boost your character's power
-
Add counter value to reduce incoming damage
-
Activate special defensive effects
The key is knowing when to counter and when to take the damage - sometimes it's better to save your counter cards for more critical moments.
DON!! Card Strategy
Managing your DON!! cards is crucial:
-
DON!! cards are added to your cost area face-up. To pay for cards or abilities, return the required number of DON!! cards from your cost area to your DON!! deck.
-
Attaching DON!! cards (face down) can boost your characters' power during attacks (multiple DON!! cards can be attached to one character)
-
Balance between saving DON!! for big plays and using them for immediate needs
Building Your Strategy
Protecting Your Life Cards
Your Life cards aren't just health - they're also a resource. When you take damage, revealed Life cards go to your hand, giving you more options. Sometimes taking small amounts of damage early can be beneficial if it means saving powerful cards for later.
Timing Your Plays
The order of your actions matters. Consider:
-
Playing cheaper characters first to test your opponent's responses
-
Saving your strongest characters for when you can protect them
-
Using Event cards at the right moment for maximum impact
Your Path Forward
The One Piece TCG rewards both strategic thinking and knowledge of your deck. Start with a starter deck to learn the mechanics, then gradually customize it with cards that match your favorite characters and playstyle.
